Varicose Veins

Three things to know about varicose veins

February 02, 2021 at 9:03 am CST

Have you noticed tiny veins starting to spread across one or both of your legs? And have some of them become larger and more painful over time? These are called varicose veins and here are three things you should know about the condition:

1. Don’t ignore them

Don’t brush varicose veins off as just a cosmetic issue as they can actually be detrimental to your overall health.

“They are not going anywhere and will only get worse,” said Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center.

If you are having symptoms such as tired, itchy, burning or restless legs, it is likely you have vein disease. And those symptoms mean you can take advantage of Eterna’s free vein screening. The consult includes a quick ultrasound to assess the veins and see if further treatment should be pursued.

2. Most insurances are accepted at Eterna for vein treatments

There are several effective options for combatting the condition, including endovenous laser treatment, sclerotherapy, and microphlebectomy. They can be done in-office under local anesthesia.

“Sclerotherapy is usually cosmetic but if it is done to clean up spider veins after an endovenous vein treatment it will be covered under the insurance,” Malinowski said.

3. Age doesn’t matter

Varicose veins are equal opportunity offenders.

“If you are unlucky and you inherited the condition it can affect you as young as in your mid-20s,” Malinowski said.

Additionally, varicose veins can be brought on by pregnancy, standing for prolonged periods of time, and wearing high heels daily.

But don’t think the condition is limited to women.

“We have treated several men here at Eterna for the condition,” Malinowski said.
